We dispense and service hearing instruments manufactured by:


l. DO NOT WASH HAIR for at least 3 days. You may have someone use rubbing alcohol on your hair and dry with a towel. This helps remove a lot of hair oil and dirt. Minipoo may also be used. Keep water out of your ear when you do wash your hair.

2. Change cotton in ear daiIy and apply 3 drops of Antibiotic ear drops 2 times a day.

3. Apply Bacitracin (or triple antibiotic ointment) if you have an incision 2 times a day until the sutures are removed.

4. Drainage from the packed ear is common. It may be brown or bloody.

5. Cotton gauze 2" x 2" may be placed on top of the incision. If so, then place your glasses over the gauze.

6. Numbness of the ear lobe is to be expected for several months if you have an incision behind the ear. The incision behind the ear usually cuts off some of the nerve sensation to the upper part of the ear lobes. Sensation usually returns in several months.

7. Pain after surgery can occur, especially in the area of the incision. Generalized aches are common and are related to the anesthetic. Some sore throats or stiffness in the neck is common from having your head turned sideways for a period of time during the surgery and having a tube in your windpipe for control of your breathing. Shooting pains for about a few seconds are common about 5-7 days after surgery.

8. Prescriptions will be given at the time of discharge if needed.

9. You should not return to work for several days, depending on your working conditions and how rapidly you heal; the exact period will be outlined in the post op instructions. No heavy exertion or straining is allowed for 3 weeks post surgery.

10. Sneezing through your nose and blowing your nose hard is discouraged for 2 weeks following surgery.

II. Bubbling noises (like water in the ear) and all types of noises are common in the ear after surgery.
12. Dizziness may either be mild, severe, or you may not have any.

13. Sometimes the tongue's taste nerve must be cut because of the disease around it. This will usually cause a decrease in your ability to taste sour, salt, or sweet in that side of your tongue. Most of the time your other side will help this disappear. A metallic taste in the tongue may also be noted.

14. Hearing improvement mayor may not occur from surgery; the hearing may take 2-4 months to improve after surgery.

15. Call the office if you have any problems with:

  • fever
  • dizziness that worsens
  • sagging of the face
  • pus or foul drainage from the ear
