Front Office

Pam Purvis and Jennifer Lopes staff the front desk in directly interacting with patients to answer the phones as well as scheduling tests and return appointments. Debbie Murphy is the office manager and head of insurance billing.

Medical Staff

James Dobbin, M.D.
Dr. Dobbin graduated form Princeton University in 1975. He went on to medical school at the University of Connecticut and received his MD degree in 1979. A general surgery residency was completed at Hartford Hospital / University of Connecticut in 1980 followed by an otolaryngology residency at University of Connecticut in 1984. He went on to a head and neck cancer fellowship at the University of Michigan in 1984-1985. He became board certified in 1984. Following his fellowship he taught 2 years on staff at the University of Connecticut Medical Center as a member of the division of Otolaryngology.

He moved to Newport, RI in 1987 and established a private practice in otolaryngology.

Dr. Dobbin has been a member of the medical staff at Newport Hospital since 1987. He served as Chief of Surgery for 3 years followed by terms as Medical Staff Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the medical staff. He also volunteered part time for two years at the East Bay Medical Clinic in Newport Rhode Island.

His special interests include sinus disease, sleep apnea, head and neck cancer, surfers ear and pediatric ENT and facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Dobbin enjoys cycling, skiing and racquet sports. He and his family live in Middletown.

Steven Freedman, M.D.
Dr. Freedman graduated from Tulane University in 1981. He went on to medical school at the Tulane University School of Medicine earning his MD degree in 1985. His post graduate education includes two years at the Alton Oshsner Medical Foundation from 1985 through 1987 in general surgery. His otolaryngology degree was completed at the Tulane University School of Medicine/ Dept of Head and Neck Surgery graduating in June 1992.

He became board certified in Otolaryngology in 1993.

Dr. Freedman joined Dr. Dobbin and Ear Nose and Throat Medicine and Surgery Group in 1992. He has been a member of the medical staff at Newport Hospital since 1992. Dr. Freedman has served as a Medical Staff Officer as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and recently completed his term as Medical Staff President, serving from 2007 through 2009. Dr. Freedman is on the Board of Directors of the ENT Center of Rhode Island.

Dr. Freedman's practice covers all areas of general ENT medicine and surgery with special interests in thyroid surgery and pediatric ENT.

Dr. Freedman enjoys golf, skiing and tennis. He and his wife Linn have two wonderful children and make their home in Portsmouth, RI.

Joseph R.  Weisberger, Au.D., CCC-A 

Dr. Weisberger is a clinical audiologist.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders (Speech Language Pathology & Audiology) from the University of Rhode Island, and went on to earn his Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

During his enrollment at Bloomsburg, he gained a wealth of clinical experience in settings such as various ENT clinics, hospitals, private practices, and schools. Prior to graduation, he also completed a doctoral thesis on "The effect of preferential seating on school intelligibility in school-age children as
tested with the BKB-SIN."
 
Originally from Rhode Island, he returned home to complete his clinical fellowship year at one of the state's largest ENT practices. While working alongside an otoneurologist during his residency, he became familiar with many complex audiological profiles and disorders of the auditory system
 
Dr. Weisberger holds his Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech Language & Hearing Association (ASHA), and is licensed to practice in the state of Rhode Island.  Dr. Weisberger specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss and tinnitus, as well as the latest hearing instrument and assistive listening technology.  He has special interests in noise-induced hearing loss, hearing conservation, and psychoacoustics. He is experienced with patient populations ranging from children to adults.
